Liquefy is a multi part series chronicling different patterns - characteristics, traits, and archetypes that emerge from collaborating with the subject.  The pieces are meant to open up questions about how we view ourselves and those around us.  Each story is distinct, yet interconnected by the common thread of “who am I?” and “who are you?”

Vol. 1 follows maya as they detangle their perception of themselves from how others view them.  In their introspection, maya references “Venus of Willendorf” - an ancient figurine whose origins are unknown.  I had read several years ago that some hypothesized that Venus was actually created as a self-portrait, explaining its proportions as emerging from a person looking down at their own body.  Although we will probably never really know, the possibility of this act of self-portraiture (an ancient selfie, if you will) reminded me of the quote by John Berger:  “You painted a naked woman because you enjoyed looking at her, put a mirror in her hand and you called the painting “Vanity,” thus morally condemning the woman whose nakedness you had depicted for you own pleasure.”

Ever shifting, we must rise, over and over again.

For Bianca Jade’s “On and On,” we wanted to explore the delusional and exhausting aspects of love - a love that keeps enduring, even if it shouldn’t. The lighting cycles from day to night, hot and cold, an endless rhythm. The dreamy visuals entice us, but as the song goes on, we gradually see parts of the set - an obvious facade and literal show, giving way to a complete reveal of how fabricated everything is. Pieces of each scene merge together, and the playback monitor creates a feedback loop - a self fulfilling prophecy that we build up inside ourselves, reinforcing hopes and dreams held so close that they explode in our embrace.
